The Giving Tree

Wow! Look how many students brought in gifts for the Salvation Army!

This was the project:
Friday, December 5th 2008
Dear Families,

An old Nigerian Proverb says, “Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot.”

In this holiday season where we are bombarded by wanton consumerism, the first grade team has decided to try and change the focus from “I want,” to “I give.” In order to achieve this goal we are instigating the $1 Project.

Each of us, J. Wright, C. Walenciak and Feinman has decided to give $1 to each child instead of a gift. They will take the dollar to the store and buy a small gift for a needy child. All gifts received will go to the Salvation Army. It will be your child’s responsibility to choose a gift. The dollar store would be a great place to take your child shopping for this project. (Please do not wrap gifts.)

We realize everyone struggles with day to day life. However, when we put others ahead of ourselves we are more richly rewarded. This is the message we are trying to instill in our first graders.

Please help us by working with us on this project.

When the gift is purchased, have your child bring it to school and we will place it under our Giving Trees.

*Please note we will be sending home a one dollar bill TODAY! Please look for it in the homework folder.

Thank you for your support!

***Note this project ties into both social studies and math goals for the use of money.

Christmas Trees

Check out the trees we made! It took a lot of patience to make sure the trees didn't fall over. We said a big thank you to Mrs. Richardson for her help, and Ms. Feinman for letting us do such fun projects this week.

After we finished the trees, we made a graph and tally marks chart. What a great way to learn in math!

Holiday Crafts

This week, Ms. Feinman's class has been working on holiday crafts for our giving tree. We have made wreaths out of trapezoids, ginerbreadmen, gingerbreadwomen, ginerbreadhouses, and candy canes with bead patterns! We have been very busy! Today we made another ginerbreadmen ornament with our pictures in the middle.

Check back next week to see what other crafts we will do!

Hello Mrs. Medley's Class!!!!!!!

Ms. Feinman has been looking at your blog. Our teachers think we should get to know each other!

We are excited to be leaving you some podcasts. Enjoy! We hope you can hear us!
